Project Chu

Overview

Project Chu was a traditional Chinese restaurant designed to create a rustic and classic concept, mirroring the Chinese culture, with a minimal influence of contemporary design. The result is an atmospheric dining environment that honours tradition while remaining visually compelling.

The Design Concept

The brief for Project Chu required the creation of an environment that felt authentically Chinese without resorting to superficial decoration. The design response was to anchor the space in materiality: raw timber, aged finishes, hand-crafted joinery, and warm lantern lighting, building an atmosphere that communicates cultural heritage through its construction rather than its ornament.

Contemporary design principles were woven in with deliberate restraint. Clean spatial planning and considered proportions prevent the environment from feeling heavy or theatrical, giving it an accessibility that a more literal interpretation would not have achieved.

Craftsmanship & Outcome

Project Chu was completed as a fully realised dining environment with a strong and coherent identity. The custom joinery and furniture were produced to a high standard of craftsmanship, and the lighting design, developed specifically for the space, gives it a warmth that shifts the character of the room from lunch to dinner service.

The restaurant has become a memorable dining destination, its design an integral part of the guest experience.
